Logistic Infrastructure of Gujarat
Gujarat, with a coastline of about 1,600 km, is India's leading maritime state and a port-centric economy, managing approximately 40% of the total cargo traffic at Indian ports. The state is home to one major port, Kandla, and 48 non-major ports overseen by the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), which facilitates the handling of bulk, breakbulk, liquid, and container cargo at its private ports. Gujarat handles around 65% of the cargo at non-major ports in India, with Maharashtra following at approximately 13%. This exceptional port infrastructure benefits from outstanding connectivity to a vast hinterland, extending across Northern, Western, Central, and parts of Southern India.
Gujarat's transport and logistics services have experienced significant growth, driven by the expansion of its robust manufacturing sector, which includes industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, dairy, pharmaceuticals, cement, ceramics, textiles, gems and jewellery, and engineering. As a pioneer among Indian states, Gujarat launched the 'Gujarat Integrated Logistics and Logistics Park Policy 2021,' underscoring its leadership in strengthening the logistics ecosystem.
Since 2018, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI), Government of India, has been conducting the annual "Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS)" ranking to enhance logistics performance across states, which is vital for boosting the nation's trade and reducing transaction costs.Gujarat secured the top position in the LEADS Survey for 2021, 2019 and 2018. Additionally, the state was recognized as a Top Performer/Achiever—the highest category—in the rankings for 2022, 2023, and 2024.
